Task:
To broaden your knowledge of motivation and learning theories, you will write a 450–550-word analysis paper in which you first summarize key concepts from one of the following theories covered in class, and then analyze their ideas/concepts as applied to language learning.
- Goal-setting Theory
- Attribution Theory
Specifically, your analysis paper will address two key points:
- What important concepts does the author introduce? Briefly summarize the main ideas of the theory and then provide a clear thesis statement that outlines what you will analyze and the conclusion you will make.
- Using examples from narratives read in EAP101A and anecdotal examples, analyze the effectiveness or usefulness of the theory for explaining language learner behavior and future performance.
Assignment Structure:
- Introduction:
- a clear summary of the key ideas of the theory.
- a thesis statement stating the points for analysis.
- Body: Write your analysis using two well-developed body paragraphs. Remember that each body paragraph needs its own topic sentence and must connect to the thesis.
- Conclusion: Restate your claim (the result of your analysis). End with a general statement regarding the broader implications of your analysis.
Writing Strategy:
Start with some pre-writing activities to help you think through the ideas in the text and how you will analyze them. Use outlining or mapping to connect and organize your ideas.
Formatting:
